Surprisingly Good

M3GAN is a robotic doll designed by Gemma, a roboticist, to be a companion and teacher for children. When Gemma unexpectedly becomes the caretaker of her 8-year-old niece, she gives her a prototype of M3GAN, which leads to unexpected consequences.

It's a new year and January has arrived. The month where winter starts to get miserable and useless goals are set. But it's also the month where movie studios drop all their stinker movies, hoping everyone will forget about them. That's what everyone expected M3GAN to be. However, after browsing Twitter and seeing the positive reviews, I decided to watch it for myself. I was not disappointed.

M3GAN is a prime example of how campy horror can be given its due, while still allowing space for strong, meaningful emotional moments to take center stage. This is what makes the movie so great, as it manages to perfectly balance these two seemingly disparate elements and deliver truly great moments. Although seemingly simple with its structure, the strong themes focused around loss and attachment helps to elevate this film in ways nothing else could.

The biggest issue I have with this film is that some of the jokes really miss the mark. They just don't have the same impact that they should and this ultimately detracts from the overall experience. However, aside from that, it is a good start to the year 2023 in terms of movies. The visuals are great, the narrative is engaging and the characters are memorable. It's an enjoyable watch and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a quality film experience this year.
